Why 0.05 PH/s Is the Practical Floor for Container Fleets

When we visit container yards across Chungcheong province, the operators who report the fewest headaches tend to run miners rated at 0.05 PH/s or higher. This is not an arbitrary cutoff — it reflects how power infrastructure, rack density, and maintenance labor interact inside a steel box.

Power Overhead Per Unit

Below 0.05 PH/s, each miner still requires its own network connection, power cable, and rack position. The fixed overhead — PDU port, switch port, physical space — stays roughly the same whether the unit hashes at 0.03 PH/s or 0.08 PH/s. In a 40-foot container limited to 24 rack positions, filling those slots with lower-hashrate units means leaving hashrate capacity on the table while paying the same per-slot infrastructure cost.

Thermal Density Considerations

Paradoxically, lower-hashrate units do not always run cooler per PH/s. Many sub-0.05 PH/s models use older chip architectures that draw proportionally more watts per terahash. We have measured units rated at 0.04 PH/s drawing 3,200 watts — nearly the same as a 0.07 PH/s model from a current-generation line. The container’s cooling system must handle the wattage, not the hashrate figure on the label.

Maintenance Frequency

Lower-hashrate fleets require more physical units to reach a target aggregate hashrate. More units means more fan failures, more hashboard replacements, and more cable connections to inspect during routine maintenance rounds. Yard supervisors at sites running mixed fleets consistently report that sub-0.05 PH/s units generate disproportionate maintenance tickets relative to their output contribution.

When Sub-0.05 PH/s Still Makes Sense

We are not suggesting that every sub-0.05 PH/s unit should be decommissioned. Operators with existing hardware may run these units profitably in open-air warehouse racks where cooling is less constrained. Our recommendation applies specifically to new container deployments where rack positions and power circuits are finite resources.

For operators planning a new container installation, we advise shortlisting models at or above 0.05 PH/s and verifying sustained power draw through an on-site assessment before placing orders.
